Privacy Policy
How we protect your data and your students' privacy.
Last Updated: August 2026
At Atypical Edge, we take the privacy of our parents, educators, and students very seriously. This policy outlines how we collect, use, and protect your information.
1. Information We Collect
When you use the Atypical Edge platform, you may input sensitive data to generate customized curriculum. This includes:
- Student Data: Names (or aliases), ages, grade levels, medical diagnoses, sensory triggers, and academic grades.
- Media: Photos uploaded to the Digital Evidence Portfolio.
2. How Data is Stored (Local Storage First)
Atypical Edge is designed to prioritize your privacy. By default, student profiles, grades, schedules, and portfolio photos are stored locally on your device's browser memory (Local Storage). This means the data lives on your computer/tablet, not on our servers. If you clear your browser cache, this local data will be deleted. If you are participating in a school district pilot or using our cloud-sync features, encrypted data may be routed securely to our cloud database solely for the purpose of maintaining your account access across devices.
3. Third-Party AI Processing
To generate customized lesson plans and therapy goals, the specific profile traits you input (such as interests, grade level, and learning style) are securely transmitted to our AI partner (Google Gemini API). This data is transmitted solely for the purpose of generating your requested educational packet. We do not sell your data, and we do not allow third-party AI models to use your personal student data to train their public models.
4. COPPA and FERPA Compliance
COPPA (Children's Online Privacy Protection Act): Atypical Edge is intended for use by parents and educators, not directly by children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information directly from children.
FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act): For our partnered schools and districts, Atypical Edge acts as a "School Official" and complies strictly with FERPA regulations regarding the safeguarding of educational records.
